Snapshot presents Snapshot 13: Poetics of the Gap: Imaginal Writing as Practice-Based Research

Milos Zahradka Maiorana is an artist-philosopher, curator, and PhD researcher based in Italy, currently pursuing doctoral research at Transart Institute of Creative Research. This exhibition develops his ongoing investigation into how writing might be understood beyond its role as a vehicle for linguistic communication. Rather than treating writing as a transparent system for transmitting meaning, the work examines the conditions under which marks appear, persist, and are encountered.

At stake is the regime of legibility that defines writing through clarity and efficiency while rendering its material presence secondary. In contrast, the works presented here do not ask to be read in a conventional sense. They operate as configurations of marks, surfaces, and intervals that reorganize attention. Through a research-creation methodology, Maiorana articulates what he terms 'imaginal writing': a practice in which writing emerges as a material and perceptual event, foregrounding its phenomenological dimension rather than its communicative function.

This position is informed by key philosophical and theoretical references, including Gaston Bachelard, Roland Barthes, and Rosalind Krauss, alongside an engagement with artistic practices that challenge the stability of the sign.

The works explore writing as a threshold condition rather than a fixed system. Across different processes, marks are displaced from their usual function and allowed to operate as material traces. Reproduction, layering, and interruption play a central role, as writing becomes something to be encountered rather than decoded. Letters may persist without forming stable words, images may fragment or overlap, and surfaces become active sites where relations emerge.

The project also reflects conditions of transmission and distance. Developed through a long-distance collaboration, it foregrounds processes of circulation, reproduction, and transformation over stable form. The use of modest and reproducible materials reinforces this approach, emphasizing iteration and material contingency.
