Snapshot Presents Snapshot 14: Welcome to Earth 2.0: Art Imitates Life, Aliens Imitate You

Welcome to Earth 2.0 is an ongoing project by Liverpool John Moores University Graphics Design and Illustration student, Breena Sinclair. Through her multidisciplinary range of practices that encompass sculpture, mixed media collages, and textiles, Sinclair deconstructs the identity and potential legacies of mankind. The resultant work poses questions about the cultural heirlooms that humans will inevitably leave behind, and which artifacts will eventually represent us as a bygone species.

The exhibition narrates an alternative reality where the human race has met their eventual demise, following the arrival of other wordily visitors on Earth who were brought to our planet through a fascination with human customs, particularly western pop culture. In this project, the world is reimagined through a kitsch lens, this is visually exemplified through the exploration of several diverse cultural themes. For instance, the recreation of human religion through depictions of the Madonna; patriotism and consumerism by paying homage to canonical works. While the androgenous alien species are not restricted to binary human cis-gender labels, they play with ideals set by human standards by choosing to portray themselves in a hyper-feminine way.

Despite the dystopian undertones, innocence and naivety are foregrounded to purposefully identify a unique perspective on human history and culture. Detached from the negative connections from which these themes originated, the aliens have stripped away their complex cultural meanings and parred them down to a simplistic form for their own amusement.

Due to their lack of cultural authority of the human-made materials, the aliens cannot conform to established human beliefs and instead impose their own conventions on what fascinates them. This is evident in The Immaculate Heart of Mary (2024), which reveals their inability to contextualise or grasp the work’s cultural significance.

The exhibition does not aim to criticise the themes that it investigates, Sinclair instead vouches for an open and honest discussion without judgement. Which can often coincide within these topics, guiding us to the realisation that the culture we inhabit is just as bizarre as these aliens.
